Endermites behave differently in the End now.

Merging into stone

An idle Endermite will occasionally burrow into a nearby End Stone block, turning it into (visually identical) Infested End Stone and disappearing. Breaking Infested End Stone without Silk Touch pops a fresh Endermite back out — so that "ordinary" End Stone you're mining might not be so ordinary.

Waking up friends

Hurting an Endermite eventually causes it to search a large area around itself for Infested End Stone and either destroy it or hatch a new Endermite from it, with a chance to chain into more — attacking one Endermite near infested stone can turn into a small swarm.
